Statistics I (2017) Key world energy statistics 2017. ![]() It is evident that the micro-turbines with the modified blades will produce 75% more energy than that of the normal blades, theoretically, if used in low wind, urban environment. Experimentation of the 3-D prototype indicated positive results for the modified rotor configuration with the reduction in cut-in speed from 4 to 2.2 m/s. The 2-D aerodynamic analysis of the modified blade section proceeds an increased lift coefficient of 11 percent, and the ulterior 3-D rotor analysis established a 20% more torque than the baseline blade configuration. Subsequent to the successful numerical evaluation, the 3-D rotor models were prototype using fused deposition modeling and tested in subsonic wind tunnel for the rotational behavior as the sheer wind turbine system. Numerical investigations were carried out on a 2-D blade spline and the commensurate 3-D rotor configuration to examine the performance of the modified airfoil against the baseline airfoil. The blades were modified with the bumps on the leading edge, similar to the humpback whale to enhance the aerodynamic performance characteristics. In this thesis, a blade with thin airfoil and a high lift coefficient ‘S-1223’, which was originally developed for carrier aircraft of low Reynolds number, was considered. These modifications have resulted in delayed stall and increased lift coefficient. To augment power conversion, in the recent times, the blades are modified by incorporating special features such as vortex generators, bumps, and slats. The blades of the micro-turbines are to be designed specially for the wind environment available on a particular site. The blades of the micro-turbines are the critical part, which converts the energy available in wind. The availability of wind over the urban area is in the range of 0–5 m/s according to the National Institute of Wind Energy, India. Micro wind turbines produce power, less than 1000 W, and befittingly, it finds potential in the urban environment for domestic applications. Wind energy has become one of the most pivotal energy rootages for many countries as it provides an economic independence in the global arena besides safeguarding the taint on the environment. ![]()
